Program learning outcomes outline what Mohawk's graduates need to know and be able to do after they complete this program.
Initially, most program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU) in consultation with employers and educators. Now, they are reviewed and updated during program review, in consultation with employers, graduates, and current students.

Vocational Standards
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Apply safety measures in plant, job site, and vehicle.
- Use fasteners, hand, and power tools, and electrical measuring and test instruments.
- Explain the properties and characteristics of natural gas and propane to promote safe handling, combustion, and appliance efficiency.
- Interpret installation codes, acts, and regulations to ensure personal and public safety.
- Outline basic electrical theory and supply wiring.
- Interpret technical manuals, specifications, schematics, drawings, and graphs.
- Apply customer relation skills.
- Install basic piping and tubing systems.
- Identify basic gas appliances and venting procedures.
- Install, service and maintain piping/tubing systems greater than 2" and/or supply pressure greater than ½" psig.
- Install, service and maintain mechanical and electronic controls on gas appliances less than 400,000 BTUs.
- Explain the relationship of mechanical system within a building envelope.
- Install, service and maintain domestic and non-vented appliances.
- Install/remove gas meters.
- Install, service and maintain pressure regulators and relief valves.
- Install, service and maintain domestic gas-fired refrigerators.
- Install, service and maintain conversion burners.
- Install, service and maintain water heaters, combo units, and potable water heaters.
- Install, service and maintain warm air heating systems.
- Install, service and maintain gas fired hydronic heating appliances and accessories which form an integral part of the appliance.
- Install, service and maintain decorative and space-heating appliances.
- Size, install, inspect and repair venting systems.
- Install, service and maintain forced air add-on devices.
- Assess duct design, size plenum connection, and tie into an existing duct system.
- Select an appropriately sized forced warm air heating system.
